Remembers When

A place to share your memoirs

Questions and answers

Q: Is this “self-publishing?”
A: Yes. Remembers When does not decide which memoirs should or shouldn’t be published. The authors do. Remembers When does not pay authors for their memoirs. Publishing is the author’s decision and for the most part, publicizing the memoir is the author’s responsibility.

Q: What do you mean, “...for the most part...”?
A: When you publish your memoirs on Remembers When, you get the added promotional value of our overall advertising and Internet presence. As more memoirs are published, more readers will visit the site. We offer indexing and keywords for memoirs, promotions such as Memoir of the Week, and search categories such as “World War II.”

Q: How much money can I make publishing my memoirs?
A: Unless you are a former president or an infamous embezzler, you shouldn’t expect to make anything from your memoirs. People can read them for free on your Remembers When Web site. If readers decide to purchase a downloadable ebook or a print-on-demand paper version, you might receive a small royalty.

Q: Do I have to have advertising on my memoir site?
A: No. We place small, relevant ads on free memoir sites. That is how we stay in business. For a small annual fee, you can set up your site with no advertising. For rates and services see our sample price list.

Q: Am I guaranteed my choice of Remembers When site names?
A: Don’t be silly! There may be many “John Smiths” who want johnsmith.rememberswhen.com as their Web site. It is first come, first served. The more specific your request, the more likely you will get your first choice. For example, try JohnXavierSmith@RemembersWhen instead of JohnSmith@RemembersWhen. This improves your chances and your search results. We will always check the site name with you before we assign it.

Q: Can I submit multiple memoirs?
A: How many lives have you lived? An individual memoir site may have multiple memoirs on it. For example, johnxaviersmithfamily.rememberswhen.com may contain the personal memoirs of johnxaviersmith, maryjanesmith, jqsmithjr, etc. Or you may publish your memoirs in sections, like The Farm Years, The Paris Apartment, Serving in World War II, etc. As much as possible, however, we try not to assign more than one memoir site per person or family.

Q: Can I just blog my memoirs?
A: Not at the present time. Remembers When is not a blog or journaling site. We recommend you use a good word processing program to create your memoir files and upload them to your site.

Q: How safe is my identity?
A: A: There are always concerns regarding identity theft and the release of too much information over the Internet. Use common sense. Avoid including unique identifying information such as addresses, specific job titles and employer names, social security numbers, and so on. You can also investigate the services of identity protection companies.

Q: Do you back up my files?
A: Yes, our hosting service is backed up regularly and can be restored in case of disaster. However, you are responsible for the content you post, and for creating secure backup someplace other than at Remembers When. We recommend you store digital copies on CD or DVD. You can also purchase hard copy and digital backups of your entire site from Remembers When.
