Does the design of my memoirs matter?

At some point or another, you've probably received a "homemade" book. It might be the bios from your class reunion, or your mother's favorite stories. At one time these "treasures" might have been a stack of typewritten pages that were photocopied (or even mimeographed!) and stapled together in one corner. As much as you wanted to find out what was in the stack of paper, you just couldn't bring yourself to pay attention to it.

Then came computers and laser or inkjet printers. It seems like anyone has the capability of creating a "professional-looking" document just by loading a template, and can print dozens or even hundreds in a matter of hours. We might even go beyond stapling them together and put a comb binding on at a walk-in copy-shop. What a difference that makes in people's willingness to read what has been handed to them.

But there is a difference of an order of magnitude between even that quality and the quality of a well-designed book. The difference in that quality shows in people's willingness to read what is written there. Careful thought about the size and shape of the type, the width of the margins, and the length of lines of type pay off in enhanced readability and the pleasure we take in handling a book.

This is true whether the book is paper or electronic. When we attempt to read on the computer, we are assaulted by blinking icons, advertisements, and pages so long we think we'll never be able to scroll to the bottom. As professionals in the world of book-design and publishing, Remembers When is taking the same care to make Web pages, ebooks, and print books all as attractive and readable as possible. You'll see changes occur over the months, enhancing your pleasure in reading memoirs. Check out some of our samples and join to start your memoirs today!
